Apprenticeship Training

Apprenticeship Training explained and how to go about providing the required training solution for your apprentices.

Before you hire an apprentice you need to establish how they will be trained.

There are two types of training providers to support your apprenticeship training:

  • Further education colleges or Universities
  • Private/independent training companies

Each of the above are commonly seperate organisations to the employer, however in some cases this is not always the case. Some employers may decide to provide the necessary training for their apprentices, employer-provider, as long as they have registered to do so with the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers.

Employer-Provider route:

"This is for employers that pay the apprenticeship levy who will directly deliver training to their own employees or those of connected companies and use the apprenticeship service to pay for apprenticeship training. Providers that meet this requirement can also act as subcontractors."

Some companies such as Interserve, Siemens, Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems have already taken this option and are running very successful apprenticeship training programmes, giving them full ownership of the apprentices training. In the case of interserve they have taken it one step further and provide training to thir party companies.

Another extended benefit of becoming an employer-provider is you receive the funding to go towards you apprentice trianing, instead of it being allocated to the training provider.

The role of the Apprenticeship Training

Whether you decide to assign an external training provider or take on the responsability yourself as an organisation the required outcome will be the same, to ensure that your apprentices successfully complete their apprenticeship training and their end-point assessment (EPA) to gain their nationally recognised qualification they set out to achieve.

How do we know what training should be provided to our apprentices?

To get an idea of what apprenticeship training should be provided to your apprentices the government have provided a handy tool for you to easily search using a job title. The Apprenticeship Training tool will give you all the information you require to be able to deliver the apprenticeship standards along with the amount of funding you can recieve depending on whether you pay into the Apprenticeship Levy or not.

You will also be able to search for registered training providers who have been added to the the apprenticeship training register by the Education and Skills Funding Agency.

How do we recruit the apprentices?

You have two options for you apprentice attraction campaign.

  • You can leave it up to the training provider to source apprentice for you, they may already have budding apprentices on their books, this will shorten the time spent on the recruitment process.
  • directly, you can use your own atraction methods to find apprentices, conduct the interviews and then either on-board them yourself if you are an employer-provider, or direct them to your training provider and they can mange the interview and on-boarding process saving you time.
