[London, 9th January, 2024] – The Treasury recently unveiled a significant development for apprenticeships, revealing a 21% surge in the apprentice minimum wage. Starting in April 2024, apprentices will witness their minimum hourly pay climb from £5.28 to an encouraging £6.40.

Empowering Apprentices: A 21% Surge in Wages Starting April 2024

While this increase is a positive stride towards fair compensation for apprentices, it is important to note that a noticeable gap persists between the apprentice minimum wage and the national living wage and national minimum wage rates for 18 to 20-year-olds, both of which received boosts from the Chancellor.

"We applaud the government's decision to raise the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices. This not only acknowledges the hard work and dedication of apprentices but also reinforces the importance of investing in skills development. It's a win-win for both employers and apprentices, fostering a stronger and more resilient workforce."

According to the new guidelines, employers are mandated to pay at least the apprentice minimum wage for apprentices aged 16-18 and for those aged 19 or over in the initial year of their apprenticeship. Post their first year, apprentices aged over 19 should receive a minimum of either the national minimum wage or the national living wage, depending on their age.

In parallel, the national living wage is set to experience a robust increase of over a pound per hour, marking a 10% surge from £10.42 to a commendable £11.44 per hour. This notable adjustment will now also extend to 21-year-olds for the first time, resulting in a 12.4% increase from £10.18 this year to £11.44 from April 2024. Chancellor Hunt emphasised that this pay rise for the National Living Wage equates to over £1,800 annually.

"The National Living Wage has helped halve the number of people on low pay since 2010, making sure work always pays," Mr Hunt said.

Simultaneously, national minimum wage rates for 18 to 20-year-olds will witness a substantial increment of £1.11, reaching £8.60 per hour. Last year, the apprentice national minimum wage experienced a commendable 9.7% increase, reaching £5.28.

The increase in the apprentice minimum wage signifies a concerted effort to value and support apprenticeships, contributing to a more equitable job market.

This increase comes as part of a broader initiative to address wage disparities and ensure fair compensation for all workers. The adjustment in the Apprentice Minimum Wage is a testament to the government's commitment to nurturing talent, encouraging skill development, and creating a more inclusive job market.

Key Highlights:

  • National Minimum Wage for Apprentices: The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices will be raised to £6.40 per hour, reflecting the government's recognition of the vital role apprentices play in shaping the future workforce.
  • Effective Date: The new Apprentice Minimum Wage will take effect from the beginning of the financial year in 2024.
  • Government's Commitment to Skills Development: This increase underscores the government's dedication to investing in the skills and potential of apprentices, providing them with fair compensation as they contribute to the growth and success of businesses nationwide.

While the primary focus of this announcement is on the Apprentice Minimum Wage, it's noteworthy that the government is also increasing the National Living Wage to £11.44 per hour. This broader initiative demonstrates a holistic approach to improving the financial well-being of workers across different age groups.
