You can apply to Nestlé, in York or Gatwick, renowned for the many famous products we make from KitKat to Felix, and so many more. Or to Cereal Partners UK - the long-standing partnership between Nestlé and General Mills, that’s dedicated solely to breakfast cereals. Based in Welwyn Garden City, CPUK make Shreddies, Cheerieos, Golden Grahams… all the favourites come from here.
Wherever you join, you’ll learn all about getting our products into stores and making sure they perform commercially. That’s the crux of it. And there are a lot of products. And a huge number of customers, both at retail and consumer level. And it needs a behind-the-scenes operation to match. Supply Chain. Sales. Marketing. Category Sales Development. They all play their part, working together to take our famous products, from factory line to supermarket shelves. No mean feat!
As a CMDA Apprentice, you’ll get to experience every department. Across a flexible three to four placements, you’ll work your way through each area to gain an end-to-end understanding of the whole process.
During your time in Marketing, the key will be to gain a really good grasp of how we understand our brands and how they perform externally (market sales and consumer & shopper measures) as well as which internally, reviewing profit and loss (P&L). You’ll also manage parts of innovation or renovation projects, in addition to supporting the team with necessary admin to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Your Sales placement will see you look after our retail customers, ensuring we maximise store sales through the promotion of new and existing products.
Lastly in Supply Chain, you will learn to understand the fundamentals of this busy division, working across a number of different teams.
You’ll also get to put your learning into practice working on real-life projects under the guidance of seasoned experts. Then there’s the six week-long placements at Sheffield Hallam University, where you’ll work towards your BA Professional Practice in Management and get to experience a bit of student life. All accommodation and travel is paid by us, not to mention the food allowance, not bad eh?
At the end of the three-year programme, you’ll come out with a degree that didn’t cost you a penny and skills and experience gained at a global operation to boot! As though that isn’t reason enough to apply, you’ll also have the option to choose to work in the department you most enjoyed. What’s not to like?
Who are we looking for?
This being a fast-paced real-world environment, you’ll need plenty of get-up-and-go and to get stuck in straight away on whatever task is in hand that day. Learning in multiple areas on-the-fly, it’ll be like three years in a mental gymnasium – it’ll take plenty of stamina as you apply yourself to different tasks. It’s hard work but you’ll be so engrossed, you’ll barely notice.
We could reel off a list of arbitrary qualities that you must possess to succeed on the programme. The truth is, in an operation so large and diverse, there’s room for all kinds of talent from all backgrounds. You might be a problem solver, a negotiator, a brand manager or a marketing wunderkind – it’s about going in with your eyes open and knowing when you’ve found your particular niche in the whole process. It’s an exciting journey and, by the end, you’ll really know where you’re going.
Applicants who hold undergraduate Business Management degrees are, unfortunately, ineligible to apply. We will be looking for 5 GCSEs (actual or predicted) at grades 9-4 (or A*-C if received in 2017 or previous), which must include English Language and Maths, plus a minimum of 104 UCAS points (or 260 points from 2017 or previous).
