London Underground plays an essential role in our city’s development. Our network covers 253 miles, serving 275 stations and carries more than five million passengers per day.
The role of a London Underground Signals engineering apprentice is critical to ensuring the ongoing performance and safety of our tube network. The technological advancements we are seeing in our trains and operating infrastructure mean that we need to adapt the way we maintain our assets to keep them operating at peak performance. You’ll be at the forefront of these developments whilst also keeping a watchful eye on our legacy assets across the network.
What you will be doing
Signals apprentices will have the opportunity to learn from experienced and qualified staff through various placements across the organisation to gain a broad range of hands-on knowledge.

- An incident department, who get signalling systems up and running again when signal failures happen
- A technical delivery department. who drive new ideas and optimise our current systems
- An engineering department
London Underground’s Signals Department covers the entire Underground Network, from Zone 1 all the way out to Zone 9. Our focus is on delivering a safe and reliable network for our customers. With many interchanges and pressure on our network to be constantly “on”, ensuring our lines are running safely and to capacity is the responsibility of our signalling engineers.
Advancements in technology are making this role increasingly interesting, you’ll be working on one of the world’s oldest transport networks as we are rolling out the most advanced technology, a truly unique opportunity.
You may choose to specialise in design, construction or maintenance as your careers progresses.

Where we can take you:
This apprenticeship is just the start of your career, the roles and opportunities available to you are endless. Alternatively, you may want to remain as a hands-on engineer, growing in knowledge and experience and passing on your skills to the next generation of Apprentices.
The current Head of Signals, Director of Engineering and Managing Director for London Underground for TfL both started as technician apprentices so it can be seen that the apprentices can aspire to eventually rise to senior management positions.
